Hey friends! If you are a regular around here, you already know that we have been gearing up for the installation of skylights to add beauty, interest, and function to our fifth walls (a/k/a ceilings) in our house (if you missed that post, you can click here to read it).
Well, the skylight installation has begun at our house and we are even more amazed than we expected! Some of the work involves replacing older skylights. You see, four of the skylights are replacement skylights (two in our dining room and two in our master bathroom). The old skylights didn't open and were discolored. And they were a TOTAL eye sore from the exterior of our house. They had a sort of dome shape to them, which I never liked. When it came to choosing a skylight, we knew we wanted VELUX skylights because they come with a No Leak warranty on the product and installation. We also decided to upgrade to VELUX No Leak Solar Powered “Fresh Air” Skylights and I'm so, so glad we did! The ceiling in our dining room is vaulted, so opening the skylights in that room will release the warm air that rises to the ceiling. Plus, with the mild Spring temperatures here in North Carolina, we will be able to open them to cool our house without cranking on the A/C.
But what has amazed me the most about the replacement skylights is how gorgeous the light is now that the old, discolored skylights are gone! The new skylights let in sunlight that isn't tinged yellow and the colors in our dining room appear true now. It's fabulous! In the shot below, you can see the difference in the color of the light coming through. The old skylight is on the left and the new one is on the right. Can you believe the difference?! We were shocked and THRILLED. The biggest transformation is coming with the brand new skylights we are having installed in the fifth wall of our master bedroom :) Our master bedroom is oddly large. I know that sounds like a weird thing to say, but truly, it's a big, huge rectangle with a gigantic vaulted ceiling, which has made it a challenging room to design. I mean, that's A LOT of wall space and floor space. And the fifth walls in our bedroom are just too prominent to ignore! Seriously, check out this shot of the ceiling that we selected to have the skylights installed just as Alex from Natural Home Lite was beginning to prep the room for all the work. It really, really needed something to break up the monotony of the drywall, and we knew the addition of skylights was a perfect choice. We've decided to flip flop the layout of our bedroom so that the bed sits on the side of the room where the master bathroom is located, freeing up the other half to serve as a relaxing sitting area. As our girls get older and eventually spend more time in the family room watching TV, we figure it will be nice to have our own sitting area upstairs. Well folks, those gorgeous new skylights are going in! Take a look at the progress so far!
The way the team from Natural Home Lite has designed our skylights includes a flared opening so that we will be able to see beautiful sky and trees from the sitting area AND from our bed on the other side of the room. We are so, so, so excited about that! We initially thought we would only be able to see out of the skylights from the sitting area, but we were wrong! And y'all know I'm a color girl, so we'll be adding solar powered blinds for light control and to add a splash of color on the ceiling :)
The replacement of the old skylights was very simple (since Alex just had to pop off the old skylights and install the new ones over the existing holes), which was amazing. Our dining room was only out of commission for 1 day, and then it was back to normal! But, you can see from the photos above that cutting a new hole in our roof to install skylights is a bit more involved, so we “moved out” of our bedroom while the installation of the new skylights was going on. Once the hole is cut and framed, the skylights are installed the same way – without any wiring needed because they’re solar powered!
Now, as an avid DIYer, I have to tell you that I am so glad we did not attempt skylight installation on our own. It's just too dangerous for us to get up on the roof.
If you are in the Piedmont or Charlotte area of North Carolina, you WANT Natural Home Lite to do your installation. They are nothing short of amazing!
