Every year when Christmas is over, I have the post-Christmas blues. It totally bums me out to take down all the decorations and to see our house go back to normal.  Do you feel the same way? If so, I am hoping I can cheer you up by sharing with you how to make a Valentine's Day wreath. I don't go crazy decorating for Valentine's Day, but I do just enough to help out with the post-Christmas blues. It helps, trust me!

How to Make a DIY Valentine's Day Wreath

Materials needed:

Steps:

You can watch a short overview of the project in this short video.

1) Draw and cut out your X and O  shapes from the foam core board using your utility knife and cutting board. For the X, I used a small level to draw out the shape. For my O, I used a red plastic bowl to create the top and bottom curves of the O. Since I wanted an elongated O, I free-handed the side and middle portion of the O {which was easy with the top and bottom curves already in place}.

This is not a vital step, but as you can see, the edges of the letters are rough and imperfect, so washi tape is a nice way to make your project look finished. Be sure to wrap the washi tape over the front of your project so that the rough edges are totally covered.

3) Now you are ready to make the front of your project pretty! THIS is the fun part. Cut your tissue paper into 1 inch squares. I used less than 1 pack of tissue paper for my Valentine's Day wreath, and the portion I used made a TON of 1 inch squares.

4) Place 1 square of tissue paper over the eraser end of your pencil, as pictured below.

5) Next, with your tissue paper still on the pencil, place your tissue paper on the glue covered portion of the foam board. Repeat over and over and over again until your letters are covered in fluffy tissue paper. I am not going to lie, it took me about 2 hours to complete this step, but it was fun because my girls hung out with me and busied themselves making their own crafts while I worked on mine :)  After you are finished covering your letters, let the glue dry completely.

6) Once all the glue has dried, you are ready for the final step, which is to attach your ribbon with a hot glue gun. I selected a pretty gold, satin ribbon. I chose to just tie a loop from which to hang my “wreath” {I'm not really sure what else to call this project!}, but you could also tie a pretty bow if you prefer.

  1. Hi there, just wondering what type of glue you used to hold the tissue paper in place? Just regular liquid school glue, a glue stick, or hot glue?
    Thanks!
